Studbook Spotlight: The Belgian Warmblood Horse and Mexican Sport Horse Breeders

September 05, 2024

In three weeks time the Longines Tops International Arena will host the WBFHS Studbooks Jumping Global Champions Trophy, closing out the summer season in style September 27-29,2024. We take a look at some of the elite studbooks that will head to Valkenswaard to take part in this prestigious event.

The Belgian Warmblood Horse

The Belgian Warmblood Horse (BWP) was established on the initiative of Canon De Mey and Daniel Van de Sompele. In 1958, the foundation was officially recognized in the Belgian Official Gazette under the name "National Breeding Association of the Agricultural Riding Horse." The original objectives were focused on providing farmers with an economically viable work and riding horse, promoting equestrian activities, and encouraging recreational pastimes, particularly among rural youth.

The BWP horse originated through the crossbreeding of various European horse breeds, primarily from neighboring countries, with native Belgian mares. Over the years, the breeding goal within BWP has evolved to focus on producing healthy performance horses with a correct and functional conformation, suitable for disciplines such as show jumping, dressage, and eventing. As a result, BWP has become one of the leading studbooks, known for its high-quality, durable sport horses that are appreciated worldwide.

Today, BWP is a relatively small but influential studbook, registering approximately 4,000 foals each year. The success of BWP horses in international sport demonstrates the ongoing relevance of the original vision. This, combined with the expertise of our breeders, makes our horses highly sought after across the globe.

Mexican Sport Horse Breeders

Established in 1995, we focus on promoting the progress of breeding sport horses in Mexico using the best European bloodlines. A system was developed that allows us to keep records in an orderly and secure manner, in this way we can provide breeders with a reliable platform for safeguarding their information.

Over time we have managed to obtain Mexican horses with great characteristics and we have used these specimens (stallions and mares) so that more local breeders can have a quality leap in their crosses. We have also managed to have excellent geldings that have a high performance in the sport.

We promote the development of the Mexican sport horse through free jumping events, approval of stallions and approval of mares. Also, in conjunction with the Mexican Equestrian Federation, the national circuit of young horses was established, which has the purpose of promoting the breeding of young horses and serves as a platform for the development of equestrian sport.
